A CEREC crown is a permanent ceramic crown designed, milled, and placed in a single visit using in-office digital technology. Instead of impressions, a lab, and a temporary crown, your tooth is digitally scanned, the crown is designed on screen and milled from a ceramic block in our office, and it is bonded in place the same day.

Most same-day crown visits take about two hours from start to finish, including preparing the tooth, scanning, designing, milling, and bonding. Compare that to the traditional process, which requires two appointments spread over two to three weeks with a temporary crown in between. You leave the same day with your permanent crown in place.

Yes. CEREC crowns are milled from solid blocks of high-quality ceramic that are strong, durable, and proven over decades of clinical use. With proper care they last as long as traditional lab-made crowns, typically 10 to 15 years or more. The material and fit, not where the crown was made, determine its longevity.

The cost of a CEREC crown depends on the same factors as any crown, including which tooth is treated, how much natural structure remains, the material used, and whether the tooth needs a buildup first. Coverage works the same way as it does for a conventional crown, as most dental plans do not distinguish between a crown made in office and one made by an outside laboratory. What is different is the timeline, since the crown is designed and milled here, so the tooth is prepared and the final crown placed in a single visit with no temporary and no second appointment. We will examine the tooth, explain what it needs, and review your treatment plan and estimated coverage before treatment begins.

Yes. The ceramic blocks come in a full range of natural tooth shades, and we select the closest match to your surrounding teeth before milling. The crown is also polished and can be characterized for a lifelike appearance. Most patients cannot tell their CEREC crown apart from their natural teeth once it is placed.

The traditional process requires a physical impression to be sent to an outside dental lab, where technicians fabricate the crown over two to three weeks. During that wait you wear a temporary crown. CEREC eliminates the lab step entirely by designing and milling the crown in our office, which is what makes single-visit treatment possible.

Temporary crowns are a common source of frustration: they can come loose, feel rough, cause sensitivity, and require a soft-food diet. With a same-day crown there is no temporary at all. Your tooth is permanently restored before you leave, with one round of numbing, one appointment, and nothing to be careful with while you wait.

Most teeth that need a crown can be treated with CEREC, including molars. A small number of complex cases, such as certain cosmetic front-tooth situations or restorations requiring specific materials, may still benefit from a lab-made crown. We will tell you honestly which approach is best for your specific tooth.

Care for it like a natural tooth: brush twice daily, floss daily including around the crown, and keep regular dental checkups. Avoid chewing ice or extremely hard objects, and wear a nightguard if you grind your teeth. With good care, your same-day crown will protect your tooth for many years.
